Looking ahead at 2025

Posted on 2024-12-29 by Magnus

I’ve summed up 2024, but what about 2025?

I wrote a while back about the obsession with technology and sharpness, of which I am also guilty. This year, 2025, I strive to worry less about gear and sharpness and more about my photographs. And I’m in a fortunate place, that I have great gear that can produce wonderful photos technically speaking. Now I have to really get to know the gear and find my photographic voice using that gear.

Below is one of my favorite photos of 2024, taken with a rather simple Nikon analog film camera. Nothing special about the gear, and the shot is not that spectacular either, apart from it gives me a great feeling. I can just imagine what the priest Karin is saying to the little boy as she points to something above them, presumably something in the window.

So less focus on gear, and more on the actual photos. And there is not much I would like to get, but one thing at the top of the list is a decently sized shoulder bag. I’ve got a great backpack that swallows mostly all my stuff, but a shoulder bag for a subset of my gear is something I’ll be looking for.

I’d like to get more experience with flash photography. Furthermore, I now have a flash gun, so the potential is there. I so think that flash photography could greatly help me in certain situations.

I want to put more time into editing my work, and perhaps develop my own style. That sounds so big, but I’d like to work toward that, at least. I recently switched from Lightroom to Dxo, and there’s so much to explore and learn. I know what style of photos I like, now I have to find and develop my own style. Photoshop I also want to get better at, hopefully I can put time into that as well.

Not only the things already mentioned, but I’d love to get started on at least one longer photographic project. Furthermore, I have some ideas, and it remains to see what can become reality. They might involve portraits somehow. But it has to be something that challenges and develops me, something manageable with the time I have outside work, and something fun. And to help me with this, I am this spring taking a university course in developing a photography project.

Unfortunately, there will be less analog photography this year, at least in terms of shooting new stuff. I will probably post some old photos occasionally, but I don’t see myself photographing new analog material.
