Kintsugi

Posted on 2024-07-222024-07-22 by Magnus

I just recently heard of kintsugi. It was through the mention of Koo Stark in a documentary about Prince Andrew and googling her that I came across this Japanese word. Apparently, she held a photography exhibition in London in 2017 with the title Kintsugi.

Kintsugi is the “is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.”

Interesting.

It’s also found its way into photography, sparking various projects, styles and exhibitions.

Some interpretations are more literal, others more figurative andsymbolical.

How would you see yourself using kintsugi in your photography?

I’m not sure yet, but the idea interests me, so I’ll take it with me and think about it. Perhaps there’ll be something to show in the future.
