I have a RØDE VideoMic, let me tell you a little about it.
It’s big! On both my work camera (Sony A6600) and my personal one (Nikon Z5), the VideoMic stands out on top.
Especially on the Sony, since it does not have a viewfinder sticking out above the body, it can be a problem with the mic appearing in the photo or video you’re taking. With the 18-105mm lens though, on the Sony, it just about manages not to do that. But that is something to keep in mind if you’re considering this microphone.
I’d say the sound is excellent. Without any particular measurements, I’d say it picks up sound in a very narrow area directly in front of it, which is to be expected. And the sound it picks up is clear, and it generally leaves a lot of latitude in post-processing.
It does require a battery (9V), but it seems to last forever.
I happily recommend this microphone to anyone shooting video. Consider what lens you will be using, and you’ll be happy with this microphone.
