I upgraded the 70-300mm to the 70-200mm. I miss out on 100mm focal length, but gain picture quality and a constant f/4 max aperture.
They are roughly the same size and weight, with a slight benefit for the 70-300: 70-200mm (179mm, 850g), 70-300mm (144mm, 745g). They are both plastic, but the 70-200mm feels much more solid, probably in part due to its weight. Without measuring, I’d say that the 70-200mm focuses faster and more accurately, meaning it nails focus faster. And obviously the f/4 aperture helps to let in more light, and create more blur in the background.
All in all, they are both excellent lenses, but it would be crazy not to say that the 70-200mm is better in some ways. And I don’t say that just because I just bought one. I’m sure I’ll return soon with more photos taken with the lens. For now, you get a few from around the garden.
All photos taken with the D800e and the 70-200, f/4, at or close to 200mm. It really strikes me how shallow the depth of field is, and how sharp this lens is.
