I recently sold the Nikon 50mm f/1.4D, and got this instead. It wasn’t really that I was unhappy with the photo quality of the D, more that I got annoyed that the lens turns when it focuses.
And that was no surprise, I knew that was the case. But what I didn’t know was that I was going to be so annoyed by it. Since all my other lenses don’t turn while focusing, I guess I’ve got so accustomed to that, that it was hard to get used to something else.
So, if you can get the D for a good price, go for it.
Anyway, the G then, it’s bigger than the D, obviously, in large part because the G has a built-in focus motor, I guess.
It’s sharp, a snap sharper than the D, I’d say. And the depth of field is obviously very shallow at f/1.4.
Focus is fast on my D7200. It doesn’t seem to hunt at all, focus just snaps to where it should be.
All in all, most reviews give the G-model glowing reviews.
On my DX cameras, 50mm is the equivalent of 75mm, so pretty much the perfect portrait lens.
All in all, a great lens.
