A favorite photographer: Daidō Moriyama

Posted on 2024-04-062024-05-26 by Magnus

Daidō Moriyama is a Japanese photographer, born in 1938, who is arguably best known for his striking black and white photos of Japan.

You would probably categorize Moriyama’s photography as street photography, simply for the fact that he walks around the streets of Japan and take photos. But I think his work goes way beyond street photography.

One of his best known photos must be this one of a dog (he talks about this shot here). It represents the style that has come to signify him. Black and white, a bit blurry, high contrast.

He shoots with a compact camera, which gives him freedom to get close to his subjects.

I leave you with a very interesting documentary about Moriyama.
