Fstoppers highlights a video by Chris Chu in which he covers the Leica 28mm f/2 Summicron, a lens that apparently cost $5,000. In Sweden it seems to sell for around SEK 60,000. Not a cheap lens!
In fact, that is about as much as all my photography gear costs in total.
Fstoppers conclusion about Chu’s video is:
For those considering an investment in the Leica 28mm Summicron, Chris offers a nuanced perspective; it’s not just about the slight improvements in image quality but also about the creative flexibility it provides. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a hobbyist with a little more money to invest in your equipment, this lens offers unique opportunities to explore new creative avenues.
I’m sure it’s a very good lens, probably amazing, and I would love to try one.
But what also rolls around my head is how would it compare to my NIkon AF-S 28mm f/1.8G. The Leica lens most likely kicks the Nikon’s butt, but how and by how much?
I, like almost any other photographer, would want a Leica, at some point in their life. But the price is way beyond what I can afford, and I’ve come accustomed to the idea of not ever owning a Leica.
So, there’s no use in grieving over what you don’t have, and perhaps what you can’t have — out and shoot with what you have, right?
But it would be nice to have…
(And yes, I know there are many much more expensive lenses, even from other manufacturers)
